Good design is unobtrusive,
Dieter Rams

Posted by Daniel Lignini,

Products fulfilling a purpose are like tools. They are neither decorative objects nor works of art. Their design should therefore be both neutral and restrained, to leave room for the user’s self-expression.

Pretty straight forward concept -or principal if you will- but either way really hard to obtain.

With so many products out there and all those that are about to be launched one would say: how is it possible to innovate or be propositive when it comes from design?

Well, design is neither about decoration nor about trends. There’re no tricks. It is about the use and the purpose.

While the use or the purpose of a product is most likely to be just one, the ways of making a product itself are many. I believe it is possible to innovate or to be propositive because an idea can always -and history has proven it- be bettered.

Tecnolumen – Dieter Rams RHa desklight.
Design by Dieter Rams and Andreas Hackbarth 1981-1984.

Finally after considering several items, I decided to go for the Dieter Rams desklight – RHa as an example of this principal and how to stay focused on the purpose and be innovative at the same time. This desklight has absolutely nothing extra added. Everything has a purpose.
